There's a lot of different ways to “bring meaning to empty spaces”. Here, I did it by creating a pattern. I drew the four pillars to create the expectation of a fifth pillar, so the fact that it isn't there becomes meaningful.

White colored pencil is a much softer white than white chalk pastel. The more subtle coloring worked well for this picture.
